Access to Sanitation is a Human Right

Worldwide, 2.4 billion people lack access to proper sanitation. Just like food, water, and air, clean and safe toilets are necessary for health and dignity. Diarrhoeal diseases – a direct consequence of poor sanitation – kill more children every year than AIDS, malaria and measles combined.

The World Toilet Organization strongly believes that to address the global sanitation crisis, collective action is necessary. Through the Toilet College, the WTO educates and trains entrepreneurs on proper sanitation. In 2016, the WTO partnered with Wetlands Work! to bring the HandyPod to Cambodia’s floating community of Tonle Sap. This incredible proactive project helps entire populations to remain healthy. The WTO works with the UN for global sanitation goals and World Toilet Day, November 19 highlights and focuses the need for sanitation. You can donate today by clicking here and selecting DONATE.

WaterAid America operates by the mission to ensure clean water, sanitation, and hygiene are recognized as fundamental human rights. By doing so, WaterAid empowers communities to break cycles of disease and inequality through sustainable solutions, working with local governments and organizations to build accessible, safe sanitation facilities. WaterAid’s efforts particularly benefit marginalized groups emphasize the connection between sanitation and gender equity, health, and economic development.

Plan International, USA focuses efforts toward creating a world where all children - especially girls - may thrive by ensuring access to proper sanitation and clean water. The lack of safe toilets disproportionately affects girls, forcing them to choose between their education or personal safety. By building sanitation facilities and promoting hygiene education, Plan International helps ensure that girls can stay in school, which uplifts human dignity for their entire communities.
